I guess what we're eating.
SPEAKER_02:Ew, that one piece was burnt. Mayor, you ruined this popcorn. I did. Oh god, that piece was really bad.
SPEAKER_01:The rule I go by is if there's a couple seconds in between pops, and I kept it just kept continually popping. That one made my eyes water. It kept continually popping. But it's got like 20% burn. But when you get a bad piece, I haven't gotten one yet.
SPEAKER_02:Also, Jay went through this phase where he was obsessed with um Oh my gosh. Also, welcome to Sister Show. Happy Tuesday. I'm Meredith. I'm Caroline. We just got right into it today. I was gonna say Jay went through this phase where he was obsessed with um popcorn seasonings. As you can see in our pantry, we've got like 12 different flavors. They don't expire until May of 2026, which is also alarming because he got them for Christmas last year and it's almost Christmas again. But they're all hardened.
SPEAKER_01:They're all rocks.
SPEAKER_02:Like you can't even get anything out. And honestly, this color doesn't look right.
SPEAKER_01:What? What do you mean? Is it like faded?
SPEAKER_02:No, it looks more pungent. Pungent's not the right word.
SPEAKER_01:More saturated? Mm-hmm. Oh gosh. Alright, we should put this away. Okay. Um, okay. Welcome to Sister Shit. We're very excited about this episode because it's spooky season. Is this our first October episode?
SPEAKER_02:Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Happy October. Have you been enjoying any fall things?
SPEAKER_01:We didn't have um our fun spooky season intro music this year, but that's because we don't know how to do it.
SPEAKER_02:And Walker had that. Thanks, Walker. We miss you. Have I been doing anything festive? Like, I've been getting a lot of pumpkin green cold brews.
SPEAKER_01:I have been leaning in a little bit harder than I usually do. I think it's because we actually have um like a little bit of a nip in the air this year.
SPEAKER_02:Sometimes. And then like sometimes it's like 80, like we went to Oktoberfest. You good? Yeah. This popcorn is like stuck in my chest. Should I do ASMR of that? Trying to get out the popcorn. But anyways. Keith's birthday was this past weekend, and we went to Oktoberfest, and I wore like a sweater tank. Yeah. And I was so hot, and I made the mistake of not wearing a bra. And so like my boobs were just like dripping onto my pants like the whole time.
SPEAKER_01:It was hot.
SPEAKER_02:It was so hot.
SPEAKER_01:That event was really fun, but the band was Mare was overstumulating. My friend said they're good at what they do, but I'm not into it. And I, well, I said that Corey. And I was, I wanted to quote the girl from Love on the Spectrum who said, This is my favorite line from all of the most recent season. What's her name? Abby. Abby. They're at the wine place, and she's like, Oh, that's interesting. But I'm not sure. But I'm not interested.
SPEAKER_02:That was the best line. Because the lady's like, yeah, isn't it such an interesting flavor? And she's like, Yeah, it is interesting. I'm not interested.
SPEAKER_01:But in like the nicest way. Keith had actually just said that to me that morning because I was plucking his eyebrows. He was doing a full that man has some long eyebrows. He's got his Scottish grandfather's eyebrows for sure. Anyway, I was grooming and I wanted to keep plucking, and he said, Not interesting. That's interesting. I'm not interested. I was like, I want to give them more shape. And he was like, not interested. Anyway, um, okay. That event was fun. But I was gonna say it was so hot, and that guy on stage that I was not interested in was wearing leather, which we all know is really pleather pants.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, I just kept beaming. I kept thinking, like, you're going to have to cut those things off.
SPEAKER_01:I know.
SPEAKER_02:I know.
SPEAKER_01:I j I just couldn't see it. They were probably filled with water. I know. Sweat. And they were they were like straight leg. Oh. I hope he wore some thick socks to soak. I know. I know. Oh my gosh. Rough times. But anyway, so that was a fun festive thing. We decorated for Halloween on October 1st.
SPEAKER_02:Good for you. I have not done that yet, and it is the 6th. That's okay.
SPEAKER_01:You still have time.
SPEAKER_02:And our neighborhood goes all out.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, your neighbor's got a really cute setup.
SPEAKER_02:I know. And Sim literally saw it through the window last night. It was like, can we go on a walk to see people's decorations? And he was like, I'm gonna have to tell them they did a great job. They really did. It's very cute. It is cute. It's their first year here.
SPEAKER_01:We have we bought some terracotta pump jack-o'-lantern.
SPEAKER_02:Oh, mom had those. I Oh, did she? I think so.
SPEAKER_01:Maybe that's why I liked them. I they're very cute. They each have a different little hat. Oh my gosh. They're very cute.
SPEAKER_02:Where'd you find them?
SPEAKER_01:Um the place, the garden center next to my house. And they were each like 10 to 20 bucks. Cute. So anyway, we we hear a little festive and we got some fall candles. So we're doing great.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, that's all you need. Yeah. I'm sick of people telling me I need more than that.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, it was good. We got like a picket.
SPEAKER_02:I got some of those um spider webs you put on your bushes. I don't need to No. You don't need more.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Um Okay, but but for spooky season, yeah, we're going to talk about it. Wait, what was the thing I was like, hold oh keep this for the podcast. So for our research tonight, Meredith, we're talking about somebody that is near and dear to Meredith and I. It's like a very, very guilty. Guilt niche interest. Niche interest, guilty pleasure. Yeah. That we have indulged in since 2020. Yes. It was kind of like a COVID like coping mechanism. Yeah. In a way. Anyways. So I had to research the beginning of their life, and you had to research from that specific album on. Yes. And I used Chat GPT because I Well, I did two. Okay. So I was asking, I'm like, is that super embarrassing? Like, we shouldn't tell people we use it. Not and I genuinely don't use it very often unless it's like, hey, write me a response to this review for work. Like my reviews and stuff are too. But that's like kind of the only time I use it. Or like I think it's very helpful for streamlining things. Non-research.
SPEAKER_01:Like if it's like completing a task for you, I think it's that's where it shines.
SPEAKER_02:But is it making me dumber if I'm like, create this system for me? Like create this.
SPEAKER_01:I feel like yes and no. It's like work smarter, not harder, you know? But will that have long-term effects? Only time will tell.
SPEAKER_02:See, because I always see the things that are like your brain is deteriorating if you're using Chat GPT. And I'm like, okay, but how much are these people using it? Because I use it maybe twice a day. But all and for like very dumb things. And I think that's what people said when the internet was invented, too. Like I think we're just But also like people are falling in love with Chat GPT. That's probably the people whose brain are deteriorating.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, something's not right with that.
SPEAKER_02:Which, like, that's the same type of person that's falling in love with like their car or their blow-up doll. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Or their baby doll. Same vibe. Yes. But I was saying I was asking Mayor environmentally if she feels guilty about it. Because I always feel very guilty about it. And she was like, I don't know about this. Apparently it's like horrible for the environment. Why? Because the processors? Processors for all of the chat GPTing going on is like takes a lot of energy. So much energy. Oh my gosh. And it takes a lot of water to um cool the cool the That's so interesting. Yeah. And so it's apparently and like towns that live near the processing plants are like suffering. Uh-oh. Wait, how? So I try re I try not to use it.
SPEAKER_01:Where are these towns? Like overseas or like in the middle of the city?
SPEAKER_02:No, like there's in there's some in the United States. I watch, and don't quote me on any of this. Wait, what did you watch? I just watched like a brief video that was like this person being interviewed about the way it's affected their town, and they were saying like that their water um what do you call it, like levels of it being healthy or like it's being affected. Really? Basically. That is interesting.
SPEAKER_01:And I am interested in that.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, I know. And probably like air pollution, I assume. Okay. Well. So, anyways, trying not to use it, but I did use it tonight. Okay.
SPEAKER_01:For so we are tonight, we are to kick off spooky season. We're gonna be talking about someone who is a little bit spooky in the way that they live their life, but like kind of in a cute but also weird and ultimately pretty cringe way. But we love that for him. We are talking about the one and only MGK, formerly known as Machine Gun Kelly. I don't formerly known as Colson Baker. Yes. So if you're not interested, sorry. This might not even be interesting.
SPEAKER_02:But also, the reason we are talking about this is because Mare and I just bought it.
SPEAKER_01:We're gonna go see him in May when he comes. Where are we going? Charleston.
SPEAKER_02:Yes. He's what it's not Family Circle Cup anymore, but whatever that one. The tennis one. Is it tennis? Ugh. Credit one. I think it's credit one now. It was Volvo, then it was credit one. So many rich people don't know what as well. But we're gonna go see it. I'm so excited. I'm so excited.
SPEAKER_01:What does one wear to an MGK concert and who else is going to be there? Those are my questions. I I truly have no idea what his fan base is because I have never met a single other person that likes him. So it'll be more investigative, maybe. Should we wear like investigative dresses?
SPEAKER_02:We have to plan outfits.
SPEAKER_01:I oh I know.
SPEAKER_02:Like I cut, should we dress up here? I'm scared.
SPEAKER_01:I'm like scared to throw a fit because, like, what if the vibes are weird?
SPEAKER_02:They could be weird. We're gonna have to get cigarettes. Yeah. I feel like we're gonna need this.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. What do we wear?
SPEAKER_02:I don't know. We'll have to figure that out. We'll keep you guys up for you. We're gonna buy a merch. We're gonna buy merch. We're also thinking about hanging out near his tour west to see if we can meet him.
SPEAKER_01:That was your idea. It was my idea, but I I have I never mind. We can do that.
SPEAKER_02:Um I just Well, because it came up because you could buy neat and greet to meet whiz Khalifa.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, just whiz?
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, and I was like, What is he doing? Black and yellow, black and yellow. Oh, he's still at it. Is he opening? He's opening. I never thought I'd see him live. Me neither. Wasn't on my bucket list.
SPEAKER_01:Um but it'll be fun. Here we are. I'm very excited. Okay, so and we post-COVID, kind of during post like right as the world was opening back up, he put out his punk album. Before that, I had like maybe heard his name, didn't know who he was, like, didn't know who he was at all. But his punk album was really nostalgic and really great, and we fell in love with it.
SPEAKER_02:And then after he put out his album, he put out a like production where he it's like all it's every song from the album made into like a movie, a movie sort of like music videos that tell a story. And we'll get to that. Okay. It's so good. So good. Like I still stand by that.
SPEAKER_01:We should watch it again. I wonder if it holds.
SPEAKER_02:Leslie wants to watch it. Okay. Because she I had a K-pop night with her where she showed me all of her favorite K-pop music videos, and I was like, Well, do I have something for you, Miss Ma'am? And I showed her the first one and she was like, Wait. It's cute. Why has he cut his ear off? Oh, I forgot he did that. And I was like, you're gonna have to wait and see. And we still haven't done it. So Okay.
SPEAKER_01:Anyways. Well, let's start back. That was a long way. Start at the very beginning. A very good place to start. Oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_02:Okay. Are you ready? Yeah. Full name. Also, rem reminder that I did this on Chat GPT, so don't come at me if the stuff is wrong.
SPEAKER_01:We don't we didn't have a ton of time to research this.
SPEAKER_02:So I got mama's gotta work. I can't be researching MG.
SPEAKER_01:I was hanging out my attic today.
SPEAKER_02:Oh.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. Got rid of like four trash bags of stuff. That sounds honestly so nice. I need to do that. It was really satisfying. I did it in like a bit of a rage, and then it was really satisfying when I was done.
SPEAKER_02:I kind of love I rage cleaned um Sunday after your girls left from sleeping over. So sorry. No, it was totally fine because it forced me into like a deep clean that felt really good. Great. Okay. Anyways. Okay. Start at the very beginning. Okay. Full name. Colson Baker. Stage name. Like we said, originally Machine Gun Kelly, which is now MGK. When was he born? 90. April 20. We're the same age. Yes. April 22nd of 1990, Houston, Texas. I'm just a few weeks older than him. I know. That's kind of a good thing.
SPEAKER_01:That's so special. I wonder if he's a Pisces. He is a Pisces. He's a Pisces moon. I learned that today. April 22nd? I don't he's a Pisces moon. I don't know. You learned that when you were researching.
SPEAKER_02:Yes. Okay, okay. I can so see that. Kindred Spirit. Because he also, like, no, I'm you said this, like you grew up being like main character energy, slash, like just pretending like your life was like a movie to be acted out. Yeah. Which is like, I think he's still doing. Yeah. Yeah. Okay, I love that. Um, okay, so his parents were Christian missionaries. Oh, I did not know that. He moved all the time.
SPEAKER_01:Are you sure?
SPEAKER_02:He was Yeah. Where's the source? Wait a minute. Wikipedia's the source. Should I cross-check this really fast? Let's just do it. You keep going and I'll cross-check it. Okay, okay. Okay. Reportedly, you're gonna need to check this too. Reportedly, he spent his first four years in Egypt and lived in various places, including Kenya, Germany, and different cities such as Los Angeles and Chicago before he settled more permanently.
SPEAKER_01:Okay.
SPEAKER_02:I don't know if this is right.
SPEAKER_01:I don't think that's right. Oh.
unknown:Okay.
SPEAKER_02:Okay, wait, we do think this is right.
SPEAKER_01:Okay, this is interesting. Wait, this is so interesting. We could have just researched this. I know. What? Okay, keep going.
SPEAKER_02:Okay, so around age nine, his mom left. I didn't know that, yes. And there aren't many details on that. It just says like she left. I have a little bit. Okay, do you want to pop him in now?
SPEAKER_01:Well, it just surprises me that his parents were Christian. It just surprised me they had such a like a worldly upbringing. I know. Because, or like, you know, travelly Christian missionary m upbringing because he I listened to a podcast interview with him, and he was saying that his mom left when he was nine, but didn't like she left, yes, but like her his dad was like gnarly, very gnarly, as he said. And like, I don't he didn't it wasn't like that wasn't specific, but I'm assuming there was like and he said like as a teen he never heard his the word mom, he only heard the word whore. So I think there was like it was a rough environment.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, I'm like it I was shocked when I read that there were missionaries because I knew that he had grown up in a very like like low income. I thought he grew up in a very low-income situation. Well, it goes into that. Okay, so we need to like really fat check that beginning part. Okay. So when his mom left when he was nine, he moved, him and his dad moved to Denver, Colorado, and they lived with his aunt. Okay. His father like struggled with unemployment and depression for like years and years and years. Um, and in an interview, he talked about his this is where you come in, how his dad was tried for MGK's grandpa's murder. So MGK's dad was tried in a trial for killing his own dad. Yes. What what are the details you know on?
SPEAKER_01:Well, it he it was in like interesting because in the interview the girl brought that up. She she was he was on the Dumb Blonde interview or podcast, and she was like asking about it, and he was kind of like stunned that she even asked because he was and he even said, I'm so surprised you found that information because it's like not information that's like really out there. Oh. But he Yeah, he his dad, like his this is graphic, but like his head was like shot off with a shotgun. Oh my gosh. And he his dad and his grandma were both tried and then were acquitted. Hmm because they ruled that it the gun was dropped.
SPEAKER_02:Oh my gosh. But like was somebody pointing at it.
SPEAKER_01:I don't know when they dropped the gun. I don't know what happened, but so his dad had like a very traumatic childhood. Okay. And then he was like, it's interesting because when I was nine, that's when my mom lost. So both my dad and I had like traumatic traumatic children.
SPEAKER_02:Okay, my dad was nine. Yes. Oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_01:Nine to try went to like had to defend himself as a nine-year-old.
SPEAKER_02:Oh my gosh. No wonder he's not okay.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Okay, so um in middle school, he started listening to rap music. Okay. His early inspo was ludicrous MM and DMX. Okay. He was bullied as a kid. He's apparently spoken in interviews about how he only had like two sets of clothes to wear and like was made fun of for being poor. Um, and then at some point his father left him to go work abroad in Kuwait. Interesting. Um, and then he lived for a t period of time in a neighbor's basement. And that is when he began experience experimenting with drugs and also recording a demo.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_02:So okay. He dropped out of school as a teenager. Um, he moved eventually moved to Cleveland, Ohio. And then when he was 14 and he was living in Cleveland's east side, that is when his identity as an artist be began to form. Um, they said that he was like doing rap battles as a kid, which is like really cringy to think about. I'm like.
SPEAKER_01:He also said he I was watched the Jennifer Hudson interview today, and he said he was like really he'd like be he was really good at dancing, but he was the only kid that looked like him growing up, so he'd be like the white kid at the party that knew all the like new dances. Oh my god. And he like popped up and did a little little jig, and I was like, oh, it was cringy it wasn't good. I mean, it was just cringy to imagine.
SPEAKER_02:I do like I do like his recent dance.
SPEAKER_01:Well, because she asked, where did that come from? And he was like, Well, that was kind of my thing. It was like you'd go out on the weekends and you either go out and get in fights, or you'd like go out to like clubs or whatever and dance, and he was like, and sometimes I got in fights, but sometimes I danced, so I like wanted to get back to that.
SPEAKER_00:Okay. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:I liked it. I liked his Jennifer Hudson interview. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:I only heard like a little bit of it.
SPEAKER_02:I liked I like when I talk.
SPEAKER_01:Do you talk about his him as a parent and your Oh, I don't. I didn't get that far in my research.
SPEAKER_02:Okay. Um, so wait a minute. Okay, here we go with things not adding up. It says that he dropped out of high school, but then this says two weeks after he graduated high school. Maybe he got a GED. Okay, maybe yeah. I'll just say that. He lost two friends to gunfire. Um, and that was cited like when he talks about how he comes from nothing. He's talking about like low resources, lots of crime, limited opportunities, lots of grief, lots of mental health stuff. Um he started putting out mixtapes in from 2006 to 2010, and that is where he started building like a local family-based situation. Um, some of his early work includes Stamp of Approval, which was in 2006. And I read this earlier and was like, I'm gonna need to look into this. It's probably so bad.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, did you listen to it? No, I haven't yet. Okay.
SPEAKER_02:But his style was initially rooted in rapid fire lyricism and hip hop. Okay. I mean, which is I think why there was and that's I think why there was so much.
SPEAKER_01:Wait, do you get into the rap battle?
SPEAKER_02:Yes.
SPEAKER_01:Okay, that's the only other thing I knew about him.
SPEAKER_02:Yes.
SPEAKER_01:I'm getting back into the popcorn.
SPEAKER_02:Okay. So in 2011, he signed Puff Daddy's Bad Boy label. Okay.
SPEAKER_00:Cool.
SPEAKER_02:And his debut EP under the label was Half Naked and Almost Famous, which I don't think I know. Um, and then he did a single called Wild Boy, which I know that song with Walka Flock of Flame, which was huge. Whenever I I'm not gonna sing it, but whenever I was in high school. Okay. Um, and that was like part of his major, like first major labeled work that like started getting him in recognition. Like not even really. Like, I remember the first time I listened to a song by him. Like, I think I knew that he was in that song, but I didn't like know who he was. Uh-huh. The first song that I heard was that song Bad Things. Um, I'm trying to remember like how it goes, but it's like a very like, I only want to do bad things to you. I don't want I shouldn't sing it because it's with Camila Cabello. Okay.
SPEAKER_01:I kind of remember that.
SPEAKER_02:Am I out of my head and that's like a sample?
SPEAKER_01:You know that's a sample, right? Yes.
SPEAKER_02:Okay. Yes. Yes. But that's like he has like a rap song with Camila Cabello.
SPEAKER_01:Okay, I recognize that.
SPEAKER_02:And that was like the first time I was like, wait, I like this song. Okay.
SPEAKER_01:Um remember when we were obsessed with Camila Cabello for a minute?
SPEAKER_02:Yeah. Um, what was it? Don't go yet.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:And Havana. Yeah, Havana. And then she didn't all Vale used to love that song. Remember she dated um what's his name for so? Pooth? No, not Charlie Pooth. What's his name? Sean Mendez, who I also loved the sort of.
SPEAKER_01:So you've decided that's probably a PR relationship.
SPEAKER_02:I think so. I don't know. They dated for so long, but okay. Anyways, um, also I love Benny Dramas. Um, remember how we used to do pretend he was Sean Mendez back in the day. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:Gosh, I miss his skits. Me too. Um his like bits or whatever you call them.
SPEAKER_02:I know. I miss Jenny the hairstylist. I know.
SPEAKER_01:I don't think he's I don't I think he's passed.
SPEAKER_02:And what's uh Deliverance, the real estate agent in LA. Anyways. Um, okay. So from there, he his first studio album was called Lace Up. It was uh put out in 2012. This year, 2012 is important. Okay. Because that is when the MM MGK beef happened. Okay. So basically, MGK in 2012 tweeted something about MM's daughter, Haley, and said, like, she's hot as F in the most respectful way possible.
SPEAKER_01:That was his you do not mess with Eminem's daughter.
SPEAKER_02:Exactly.
SPEAKER_01:Like, if you know anything about Eminem, it's that you do not talk about Haley. Keep her name out of your mouth. And she was 16.
SPEAKER_02:Oh. So it was bad. It was bad. But he claims that he didn't know her age, but like It's bottom line, you don't mess with that. She's young. I mean, she's young. Sorry, you don't mess with Eminem's daughter. So, um that was the seed of the beef.
SPEAKER_01:I forgot the beef was with Eminem.
SPEAKER_02:Yes.
SPEAKER_01:And he like didn't apologize. He like kind of showed his ass, didn't he?
SPEAKER_02:I mean, I think that he like was like, I didn't know her age, and like. But didn't they like rat rattle back and forth? So so then basically Eminem can't got him cancelled in hi in Eminem's world, like banned from all like M all Eminem doors that could have been opened have now been closed. Okay, I see. So then fast forward to 2018, Eminem releases kamikaze, the album. And on that album is the track Not Alike, which was he didn't name MGK like whenever it first came out. Yeah. Um, but he has lots of lines that are like aimed at him. Um this one says like, it quotes this one next time you don't gotta use Tech Nine if you want to come at me with a submachine gun and I'm talking to you, Kelly, keep commenting on my daughter Haley. So Burn. Yeah, burn. Which like I would never want to be on a minimum's best. No, I'd be very scared.
SPEAKER_01:Um sad because it was like his hero.
SPEAKER_02:I know.
SPEAKER_01:But like also don't say weird stuff about minor.
SPEAKER_02:Or in general.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, it's weird.
SPEAKER_02:Um and so a few days after that dropped, MGK came back and released Rap Devil as a disc track that was like aimed at Eminem.
SPEAKER_00:Okay.
SPEAKER_02:So yes, he did not handle it. Well, he did the disc track. Um apparently in Rap Devil, he attacks Eminem on multiple fronts, his age, his perceived relevance, his earlier albums. Um apparently it's quoted like the last four albums are as bad as your selfie.
SPEAKER_01:What's but what what's the selfie?
SPEAKER_02:I don't know what the selfie is. I need to look that up. He like takes a jab at his sobriety.
SPEAKER_01:Oh my god.
SPEAKER_02:He this says he also takes a jab at his grooming, including making fun of his beard. Oh, like grooming. Like, yes, the way that he grooms his facial hair. Okay. Yeah. So it's not good.
SPEAKER_01:What happened after that?
SPEAKER_02:Um his Eminem's answer to Rap Devil came in the form of Kill Shot, which was released September 14th, 2018. So all of this is happening in the month of September 2018, it sounds like um yeah. He apparently talks about his MGK's man bun and its age and his commercial success. And one of the lines is I'm 45 and I'm still out selling you. How are you gonna name yourself after a damn gun and have a man bun?
SPEAKER_01:That's a good line.
SPEAKER_02:References to watching Eight Mile on a treadmill. Why? Versus MGK's bar. I don't know. I don't understand that.
SPEAKER_01:Okay.
SPEAKER_02:Sorry.
SPEAKER_01:I'm just So was that the end of the what rap battle?
SPEAKER_02:Um Eminem's track is much more direct, pointed, and lyrically dense in all of his rebuttals, so it sounds like I mean, obviously Eminem's gonna want a rap rebuttal. A rap rebuttal.
SPEAKER_00:Okay.
SPEAKER_02:Um, but so that is why Jay has always been like, no, I don't like MGK.
SPEAKER_01:Well, yeah, I mean, you know, it's he's a hard sell.
SPEAKER_02:He is a hard sell. I don't expect anyone to be on board.
SPEAKER_01:No.
SPEAKER_02:Um Rap Devil was actually a hit and arguably raised MGK's profile significantly.
SPEAKER_01:That was with a single?
SPEAKER_02:The one that was like Against CM.
SPEAKER_01:Okay. Um That's where my history with him kind of begins.
SPEAKER_02:Many critics and fans thought that Killshaw actually won the exchange, though. So, I mean, like we just said, M1. Um Rap pedals are so exciting. I know. You know that um Nikki Minaj is like in a bunch of beef with all the girl rappers.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. I really want to get into that. We only know that because of what Ben posts on his own.
SPEAKER_02:I tried to get Ben to come on here and talk about it in the week that you were in Italy. And he was like, no, I'm not having people come after me for what I have to say.
SPEAKER_01:Oh.
SPEAKER_02:So he's trying not to get it. It's too hot, right? It is too hot. But I'm I want to know his opinions. I mean, his opinion I I haven't gotten into it enough, but his opinion seemed like Like Nicki's in Nikki's in trouble. Nicki's in trouble, from what I can tell.
SPEAKER_01:Okay.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, we'll get into that. Okay. Okay. Um MGK apparently said that after Kill Shot, he had a response ready, but he decided not to release it because it wasn't in line with where he was headed. I can't decide how I feel about that.
SPEAKER_01:I mean, to each, you know, whatever.
SPEAKER_02:I I believe him, but I'm also like, or was he just like shit MM1?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. And that's respectable too. It is. You gotta pay respect.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah. You know? And he should have done that before he talked about his daughter. But anyways. Um Yeah. So that's what I have got here. I he's got a bunch of other albums, but we don't need to talk through those.
SPEAKER_01:You're like tapping your papers on their stack of papers on the desk and sliding your glasses, taking your readers off.
SPEAKER_02:Yes. That's that's includes my portion of the history. Because because then he comes out with um the album Hotel Diablo.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, that's what I was thinking of. Hotel Diablo is what that's how I met Travis Barker.
SPEAKER_02:Yes. Yes, yes, yes. So so it talks a little bit about D are you talking about that?
SPEAKER_01:No.
SPEAKER_02:Oh, okay. Cause yeah, so he did Hotel Diablo, and that was where Travis Barker came into play. Yes. And then from tr there is where you take Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_01:So I feel like we need like an intermission or something.
SPEAKER_02:Do you have any jokes you can tell? No, but I'm just like really deep in this. I'm trying to stop reading. Should we do some more ASMR? I'm gonna die when you get a burnt pee.
SPEAKER_01:Do people Is AMSMR chewing kind of against the whole point? Some people hate the sound of chewing.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, I don't.
SPEAKER_01:What if it's polite? I guess. What I've been doing is licking the popcorn and then sticking it in the nacho powder because we forgot to put butter. So no one eat out of this bowl. Okay. I know I want a snag, but I'm scared of your popcorn. It's not good. Okay. So a few years later, I don't know what happened. I guess he was writing Hotel Diablo. Because my history starts in early to mid-2020.
SPEAKER_02:Okay.
SPEAKER_01:MGK begins transitioning towards a pop punk slash rock sound call and he collaborates with Travis Barker, who he met.
SPEAKER_02:I guess they recorded or like met in the studio for the Hotel Diablo. Okay.
SPEAKER_01:So then after that, Travis was like, I want to produce and play on your Tickets to My Downfall. Tickets to My Downfall is was my introduction to him. Will you introduce me? I think.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, I think I I heard the album and it was so nostalgic, just like the pop punk. I was like, gosh, this album is so good.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, it was so it's so good.
SPEAKER_02:And so then I showed you being like, this feels just like what we listened to.
SPEAKER_01:And Travis Parker's just so good. He really m made the album. So yeah, because it really just like brings you right back to if you're like craving a little pop punk, take us to my downfall. It's sad because it's like he's in it.
SPEAKER_02:Like it's in like a dark time. Yeah, I'm like as going through it in the album.
SPEAKER_01:But it's it feels very nostalgic if you were a teenager in the 20s, early 2000s.
SPEAKER_02:Like I would say the 2010s. 2010s. Early 2010s.
SPEAKER_01:Okay, so that was early to mid um November of 2020, MGK and Megan Fox make a red carpet debut publicly as a couple.
SPEAKER_02:This is where I want the teenager.
SPEAKER_01:Okay. They be their their history's a little bit confusing, so buckle up.
SPEAKER_02:Okay.
SPEAKER_01:They began dating earlier in 2020. So I guess when he was like writing his Take It's My Downfall, he was starting to date her.
SPEAKER_02:You know the under the ban you just like. Oh yeah, this will get yes, yes, yes. Okay.
SPEAKER_01:They met on a f I didn't know he was in a movie. They were in a movie together.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:Called F um Midnight in the Switchgrass.
SPEAKER_02:Oh, I didn't know that's where they were. And that's where they met. He was in another movie.
SPEAKER_01:Filming got shut down because of COVID, and they were like in some South American country or Puerto Rico or Canadian country. And they hung were hanging out while production was stopped, and that's how they met. And she also, I just realized, had recently been coming off of like a 15-year marriage to 90210 guy.
SPEAKER_02:Yes. Okay.
SPEAKER_01:Has three kids. Did not know that. Yeah. I don't know like anything about her.
SPEAKER_02:Okay. So you didn't like were you the guys in your high school obsessed with Megan Fox?
SPEAKER_01:Oh my gosh, yeah. Transformers. Transformers. My gosh.
SPEAKER_02:And like and Jennifer's body. Yeah. Honestly so.
SPEAKER_01:I need to watch that.
SPEAKER_02:We should watch it the spooky season.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, we should. I didn't know anything about her personal life. Okay. I only knew her as like a sex fan.
SPEAKER_02:Any drama also loves Megan Fox.
SPEAKER_01:Yes, it's true. Okay, so in early 2021, he releases Down Falls High, which is a musical film project based on the album. Yes. It's very it's so good. Like it's very charming.
SPEAKER_02:And Travis Barker's in that too, which is just like really fun to watch him.
SPEAKER_01:It's stylistically just like very cute.
SPEAKER_02:It's very sad.
SPEAKER_01:It's very colorful. It's just like styled so well. Okay. In 2022. This is kind of boring stuff, but basically he's launching.
SPEAKER_02:I want to know about Megan Fox and him sharing blood.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, okay. So in 2022, they announced their engagement in January.
SPEAKER_02:Okay.
SPEAKER_01:Um, all is well. They're they get engaged. My wait, let me pull up. I had like another page that had like this timeline. It's so long.
SPEAKER_02:But they've broken up like a bunch of things. Let's forget dates.
SPEAKER_01:I'm just gonna talk from the heart.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01:They get engaged under the banyan tree. What is a banyan tree?
SPEAKER_02:It's like those trees that like are covered in roots.
SPEAKER_01:Okay. Like like on um the Lion King.
SPEAKER_02:Maybe. No. It's like very um, it's very tropical-ish.
SPEAKER_01:Oh. Okay.
SPEAKER_02:See, it like has all the like. Oh beautiful.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, weird. Okay. So they Mother Willow, if you will.
SPEAKER_02:I do think it's like African-ish. Native to Indian subcontinent. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01:Okay, so they get engaged under this tree. I think there's a there's a song about it. They get engaged, then they then they exchange each other's blood. They say it's not satanic.
SPEAKER_02:Okay, wait, but really back to the they have a song about it. Remember it's the song on the album where they're like talking to each other, and she's like, Do you even remember what you say to me about it? Oh yeah. I don't even know if you remember because you're always drunk. Yeah. And it's like, that's when they got engaged.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Do you rem do you remember that, Bob?
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, I think it was a tumultuous time the whole time. So he they get engaged, they switch each other's blood. It's not Titanic. Megan Fox has quoted like in multiple interviews saying that she believes that they are can like um fire. What's it called? Soul fire. Can there's a whole twin flames.
SPEAKER_02:Oh gosh, like the cult.
SPEAKER_01:Well, I don't I think twin flames is like a is like a f expression that is used similarly to soul mate, but they she said it's different than soulmate, because it's actually when your souls elevate so much that they um it splits. And so like your so like at one point like a cult to me. One soul elevated so much that it split, and then they it went in, one went side went into Megan Fox, and one side went into MGK. So they're like soul twin flames.
SPEAKER_02:Okay.
SPEAKER_01:Okay, and so that is the belief going forward. Okay.
SPEAKER_02:Um so not satanic, twin flames.
SPEAKER_01:Twin flames. They're doing a lot with blood.
SPEAKER_02:I'm like, I've never, I guess I don't have a twin flame because I've never once wanted to rub my blood in anybody else's.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, I also just was really hit with this like the dichotomy of this woman of like, I'm just I'm leaving my marriage of 15 years and my three kids with like 90210's shiny, polished Beverly Hills dude, and now I'm like drinking this other guy's blood.
SPEAKER_02:Like it just She didn't drink his blood, did she?
SPEAKER_01:I think they did. Oh I think they drink each other's blood.
SPEAKER_02:Oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_01:I need to fact check that. But um there were yeah, I think they did that. I I'm pretty sure. So, and her her engagement ring was infamously made so that if she took it off, it would like hurt. Hurt her. I knew that.
unknown:Yes.
SPEAKER_02:So shortly after what did she do when they broke up 15 times?
SPEAKER_01:I guess it just hurt her finger. I don't know. But so, and like how how badly did it hurt? I don't know, is it more symbolic? I don't know. So they called off the engagement shortly after. Bloody Valentine, you're right. They were dating because Bloody Valentine was kind of like the first hint of like, are they dating? Which was like the first single on Tickets to My Down.
SPEAKER_00:Why is it so good?
SPEAKER_01:It is good, but um, this history is so confusing.
SPEAKER_02:Call off the I mean the song is so good.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, yes. Call off the engagement. Then they they're like on and off. She miscarries, and then she gets pregnant again. I think they might have been like broken up, but then they have the baby together. Yes, they're co-parent, they're currently co-parenting.
SPEAKER_02:Yes. Um, things are like not bad.
SPEAKER_01:But they're not together. No, I know that they're not gonna be able to do that. But I think they're co-parenting well. He was at the birth, Travis Barker and Michigan Gunn Kelly. They wrote a score for the birth. They wrote a score in a certain hertz frequency. What's it? I gotta like wrote this down because it was so interesting. In 432 hertz frequency to play as the baby was being born. They did this frequency because it's supposed to be the frequency of the earth. And if you listen to music, there are some studies that show if you listen to music at 432 hertz, it is supposed to like relax you and you're supposed to feel more spiritual and all these things. Okay. So he likes to wrote a score for her to give birth to. That was sweet. I know, and they're like not together, and Travis was involved, which is like so random. Love that. But like also, can you imagine Travis Barker drums as you're giving birth?
SPEAKER_02:No.
SPEAKER_01:That honestly might have helped. I think I might have needed that. I needed some like intensity that I didn't have in my own self. They should they should like sell that.
SPEAKER_02:Put it on Spotify. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:Um they they posted on Instagram, she's finally here, our little celestial seed. And everyone thought that was her name. That's not her name. Her name is Saga Blade Fox Baker. So you choose which one you think is better. Saga's kind of a cool name.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:Better than Celestial seed. Yeah, way better. Um okay, so they had the baby. He August 20, we're flashing forward to August 2025. That was this summer. Okay. The city of Cleveland designates MGK Day, August 8th through 10th in his honor, and celebrates his roots and community work. We saw footage of that because remember, we sent each other the videos and we thought riding a motorcycle down a street and everyone.
SPEAKER_02:A bunch of people on motorcycles.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah. And we were like, what is MGK Day? I think it's why is he on a motorcycle?
SPEAKER_01:And like, is Cleveland Cleveland like excited about it?
SPEAKER_02:I guess so. It was kind of cute. Also, we forgot to talk about his um daughter. His daughter.
SPEAKER_01:Oh yes, I completely skipped over that. And he That wasn't even that see, that wasn't in my Chat GPT history.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, mine either. But he w became a dad when he was 18.
SPEAKER_00:Okay.
SPEAKER_02:Um, and like still is like, I think in decent relationship, not really like co-parenting with his ex canon.
SPEAKER_00:Okay.
SPEAKER_02:But um Who is she? I sh they were like they met in high school.
SPEAKER_00:Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_02:And but his older daughter, like, they have the sweetest relationship. They're sweet, I think. Like I think he's like a really good dad.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah.
SPEAKER_02:He's also sober now.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. He's been sober for a year. He's been sober for a year in August, I think.
SPEAKER_02:And um we know about him covering up all of his testimonies.
SPEAKER_01:Oh my gosh, I have some fun facts. They're not in a timeline, but I have fun facts.
SPEAKER_02:Okay.
SPEAKER_01:Okay. Fun fact, I've heard him twice with my own ear say whenever someone asks how old he is, he says, 25, they say. And then what's his name on Watch What Happens Live? Yeah. What's his name? I can't remember. Seth Cohen? No. What's his name? Not what's that guy's name? I can see Andy Cohen. Andy Cohen? Is that right? Seth Cohen.
SPEAKER_02:I do love Seth Cohen. I do love him.
SPEAKER_01:Andy Cohen is like, oh yeah? And they're he's like, yeah, I mean, I think I like might be an alien or something.
SPEAKER_00:What?
SPEAKER_01:And Andy's like, okay. And he did the he did the same thing on Jennifer Hudson. And I gotta say, I think that woman was like not interested in NGK. She was doing the bare minimum in the interview. Didn't she feel that way?
SPEAKER_02:Well, I didn't watch the whole thing. I just watched her talking to him about his daughter.
SPEAKER_01:I just think they weren't super sympatico, you know? I mean he's a tricky guy.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah. Him dancing to the thing down the That was very endearing. And also we forgot to say.
SPEAKER_01:His interviews are just like odd. Painfully slow. But he's a thing, you know, he thinks before he talks. Yeah. I like it. He also has that one line in his new album about how he did LSD for 30 days straight and how he has holes in his brain. And I do think about that a lot when he's talking. Me too.
SPEAKER_02:Me too.
SPEAKER_01:Because there's holes in his speech.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah.
SPEAKER_01:You know?
SPEAKER_02:Um on his latest album we forgot to talk about too, the the crossover between him and Third Eye Blind.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, but the tattoos. Oh, sorry, sorry. People don't care. People have turned this shit off. People don't care about Third Eye Blind. He's 45. I know. Okay. So the tattoos, he has all these tattoos. He started covering them up. I remember Jennifer being, not Jennifer, my gosh. Talk about holes in your brain. Megan is like, it's spiritual. It's that's his journey. He was getting sober. He's getting tattooed. He tells Jennifer Hudson that he Jennifer Hudson? On the show.
SPEAKER_02:Oh uh.
SPEAKER_01:That he she's like asking about his tattoos. And he's saying he like wanted to imagine he's like, we have the skin, and like I have this, I just like wanted to imagine what like skin could look like. That was his answer. You've gotta be kidding me. No, I'm not. But you know, it could have been a cop-out. I mean, he didn't want to talk about it. But like, weird answer, right?
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, like if you don't want to talk about it, you just say, like, yeah, I just like thought it would be cool.
SPEAKER_01:And you know the worst part is that what he was like, well, I had this idea. Well, my friend, whoever had this idea, to see like what skin would look like.
SPEAKER_02:You what? Yeah. Yeah. Was this why he was doing the LSD for 30 days?
SPEAKER_01:I don't know. Wait, what?
SPEAKER_02:Like, was he getting tattooed while he was on LSD?
SPEAKER_01:No, he did he did mention he's like, I don't, I do it totally. Like, I don't go under some people go, which I don't like. Do people go under to get tattoos?
SPEAKER_02:No, I just meant like, was this an LSD decision?
SPEAKER_01:Maybe. Oh, like he did it after?
SPEAKER_02:Like he was on LSD for 30 days and was like this conversation is like LSD for 30 days.
SPEAKER_01:Are we on LSD right now? Have we how long have we been here?
SPEAKER_02:We need to wrap it up. Clearly, you guys, we have a weird niche obsession.
SPEAKER_01:We do.
SPEAKER_02:And then it's kind of embarrassing.
SPEAKER_01:It is. He did a crossover episode with Third Eye Blind, which is our other song, which is our other niche obsession.
SPEAKER_02:And we were like we went through a third eye blind phase. We've seen them in several times. I know. Same. I've been in the third eye blind phase since like sophomore year.
SPEAKER_01:I know. Anyway, we love him. We get to see him in May.
SPEAKER_02:We're sorry if you guys have zero interest in him.
SPEAKER_01:I do want to watch Jennifer's Body.
SPEAKER_02:Yes, let's watch it.
SPEAKER_01:I do want to watch the birding movie.
SPEAKER_02:Yes, the birding Hallmark movie we're gonna watch. We're gonna watch Jennifer's Body. Everyone else should watch Damn Falls High.
SPEAKER_01:Maybe. Yes, please. It's so good. Also, I love his song cliche. It's cute.
SPEAKER_02:Sim loves it. Sim wanted to go to the concert, and I was like, Buddy, you can't go to an MGK concert.
SPEAKER_01:I just, I feel like that song, it was just cute. And he said this whole album was like a returning to himself. He did say in the podcast I was listening to, he was like, I was tired of being the person that everyone perceives me to be. I was tired of being so hard. He was like in relation to his dad. He's like, I saw my dad be such a weak man for so long, and it was what I hated about him the most. So my whole adolescence and adulthood, I've been like trying to be everything I didn't see in my dad, and I'm like kind of tired of it. And I like just want to, I'm like over it. I want to be, I just like want to be myself.
SPEAKER_02:Well, and everyone shits on him so hard because he's gone through so many different phases. I'm like, haven't we all I know I had camo crocs at one time whenever I was like I know.
SPEAKER_01:So I have a lot of respect for him because I do think he, you like you said, he like it's like a lot of flack and he's he's a hard guy for people to pin down. Like I think like like we just had the weirdest time finding all of his history. I just think he's like a kind of an enigma a little bit, but he like shows up and he's honest. Like when people ask him, I don't know.
SPEAKER_02:Like, you would think he like cares about his family and his.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, I just like and I think I think he like him and Megan's relationship was like not perfect, as everyone knows. Anyway, he's human. We're all human. I love, I just like love people's stories. Me too.
SPEAKER_02:I hope y'all enjoyed this because we clearly really did. This has been our longest time.
SPEAKER_01:Anyone wants to come with us in Charleston to in May to Charleston? Let us know.
SPEAKER_02:Let us know. Get some tickets. They were not expensive.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, okay. But yeah, we we still need to do our cringy um middle school episode. Yes. So send your stories.
SPEAKER_02:Ask for them. We need to like ask on social.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, but also if people have just go ahead and send, don't wait for us to ask either.
SPEAKER_02:And we will keep it anonymous.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, we will.
SPEAKER_02:Just tell us. I want to know because I did some weird.
SPEAKER_01:I need to know about this camo croc face.
SPEAKER_02:You'd know about it. I basically just like smoked camel crushes and wore camo crocs for like a month and a half. It's like my Avra Levine. Literally never. Like, I think I truly wore the Crocs for a month and a half. I love that. And then I just was like, I don't think I want to be a redneck.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. Look at you now.
SPEAKER_02:And then I went through like 40 phases. Like we all do. You all have to, you gotta figure your stuff out.
SPEAKER_01:I wore six since Shields to class at 8 a.m.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, you did.
SPEAKER_01:Not six, but they were tall. Go back and listen in season one if you want to hear that little story. Okay. Um, well.
SPEAKER_02:Well, happy Tuesday.
SPEAKER_01:Happy Tuesday.
SPEAKER_02:Um, I guess we'll see you next Tuesday.
