Speaker 1:

Happy Tuesday. Happy Tuesday. I'm Meredith, I'm Caroline. Welcome to Sister Shit. Today we are starting off spooky season. If you didn't notice, we had some new intro music.

Speaker 1:

What's your favorite part about spooky season? Oh my gosh. Also, do you let yourself start spooky season before October? I decided this year that it's a no for me. So I used to not, I used to say October first is when spooky season starts. No pumpkin cream cold brews, no fall candles, none of it. That went out the window this year. I said I am denying myself joy and I let myself start the day that pumpkin cream cold brews came out. It's so hot outside. That's why they made a cold brew. They made it for that specific reason.

Speaker 1:

I think things become feel less special the longer we draw them out, like with Christmas. It's like if you start decorating before Thanksgiving by the time Christmas rolls around. I'm like over it. But I don't know. I like savoring every moment, because I already put my Halloween decorations out. It's not even October yet. I did see the spider webs and we put like the ghosts hanging up on our porch. I just I don't know. It's only a month long. It goes by so quickly and I really like looking forward to the next thing. That's in my personality. So I just like, I jumped on this year and I have not regretted it so far.

Speaker 1:

And you love seasonal decor? I do, I do. I have a hard time with it. I put it up and it stays up for eight months. Yeah, I mean I take it down for three and then it's back up. Yeah, yeah, I mean more than that, but you know, yeah, I.

Speaker 1:

So my favorite thing about spooky season I like the cool weather. I also just love, like, all the nostalgic movies. Yeah, what's your favorite Nostalgic movie Like spooky movie? Yeah, I mean, I love hocus pocus. Obviously, that one's like top of everyone's list. So, like, let's, I don't know, beyond hocus pocus, which one do you feel like you have to watch every year? That's the only one really Really the Harry Potter, oh gosh, we haven't started watching this yet, but I feel like I can't really say that because I'm not like I didn't read the book, so it feels a little bit. You can say it. No, you can say it and you can like Harry Potter without reading the books. And I think this year I want to watch double, double toil and trouble with my girls, with Mary, kate and Ashley. Oh my gosh, that movie scared the shit out of me. Oh, is it scary? I don't remember. I was a little spooky and I just remember being like what's happening. Maybe I'll vet it. I really love the Adams family. Oh, I never think about that one. I've grown to love the Adams family.

Speaker 1:

Maybe I'll rewatch Wednesday. I was, I thought, this morning at work, I was making my coffee and I thought I think it's I want to rewatch Wednesday this year. I loved that series. It was such a good series It'd be so good to watch during spookies these days. You know what?

Speaker 1:

I watched it with dad and it was a great bonding experience for us, because I feel like it was like nostalgic for him and me, but like it was, and like we both equally appreciated it. Yes, like it was just like really well done. It was like one of the best all around, like any age show that I've seen, not for kid kids, but like it wasn't raunchy. I know it was just like really genuinely entertaining. Yes, without yeah, without being like explicit in any way, yeah, and like had spooky intrigue, but like wasn't scary. Yes, yeah, it was great. I'm going to rewatch it, I know. Yeah, yeah, yeah, man love it.

Speaker 1:

And then are you going to be watching Hocus Pocus 2 as well? I don't know. I feel like that might have been a one and done for me. I was going to say I think it was one and done, but, like I said, the physical numbers really caught me off guard. I honestly kind of forgot about it as soon as I watched it. Same, it was fun, that was also very cute. But like I don't need to watch it again.

Speaker 1:

But the first one brings true. You don't need to see anything past the first one, sure don't. Yeah, yeah, so to kick off Spooky Season, I was thinking we could talk about Becky Baker. Wait, did you have an intro question for me? Well, I feel like we just did it with oh, what Are you watching Spooky Season? I thought you had a surprise for me. Oh, we changed our idea, so I wasn't gonna ask it, but I will. Oh, darn it, it's. It was a. Would you still be my friend if?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I bought an electric scooter and, like, scooted around town. What topic did this have anything to do with? It didn't have anything to do with the topic. It was completely random. It's just not. It kind of is spooky but wasn't spooky.

Speaker 1:

Are you talking like single wheel between your legs, electric scooter? No, stand up With the handle With like the one you had when you crashed into the mailbox, cause we've been there, done that and it did not end well. That had a seat. It had a seat. It had a seat. It was like the seat scooter. Everyone had those. Yeah, don't say oh, caroline, like I was the only one that had one of those. I was cool as shit. It was cherry red. I forgot about the seat. I thought you were standing when you crashed into the mailbox. I crashed into a mailbox and went over the mailbox, landed on a thorn. Bush had thorns all in me and I cried the whole way as I scooted I'm so sorry. I thought it was out of the mailbox, I just crashed into a mailbox, but I it was like the ride home was too long for me to still be that upset about it. So I was like half upset.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, you lose momentum, yeah, it was awkward, but no, I mean like a scooter that people just like take around town, like I've been seeing this guy in my neighborhood scootering all the time. No, I think that's smart. Wow, I'm really surprised. I thought you would totally hate on it. I mean I would not ride that on the road, on your main road. That would be horrifying. Well, yeah, you don't ride it on a road, you ride on a like sidewalk. No, I know, I mean like I wouldn't ride it on like the sidewalks near that main road, just because I don't know that main road, any motorist transportation. But like if I was like, oh, I scooter now, you'd be like It'd be so cool. Yeah, I'm for it. I'm so shocked by your answer. I thought that you would be like I mean, they're like scooters. No, they're normal. I mean like, feel like they're like there's like the bird scooters, they're like, they're like a normal mode of transportation. Okay, okay, I don't have money for a scooter. You know.

Speaker 1:

What you do have is roller blades. I do. Do you remember why I have roller blades? Yeah, because I love class. I bought them for myself as my first paycheck present when I worked at a law firm. How much were they? I think they were $45. Where they knew or used they were new from Target. And I went to Target and I said I used to do this thing before. I was responsible where I would. Anytime I got paid. For the first time I had a new job, I'd buy myself something like really extravagant, and when I started at the law firm it was roller blades. Did you use them a lot? No, I didn't. I still have them. They have come with us for every move and Jay has begged me to get rid of them. I'm like I can't. They're my only pair of roller blades. Well, you wouldn't have more than one. I got them at the kids section too, so they were like a little bit cheaper.

Speaker 1:

Rollerblading is deceivingly hard, not like to gut going, but like it's like a workout On a road. I get it why people in the 80s were working everywhere. I took them to a parking garage and was like, oh my gosh, this is so much easier. I was like trying to do it on just like a regular ass road or sidewalk, very bumpy, lots of traction. My feet were tickly. I was having to like basically walk, slash, run with wheels on my feet, but then, like in a parking garage, I was just like gliding down the hills. Yeah, no, I would not judge you for getting a scooter. I think it would be fun. Well, I don't think I would actually get one. I think I have thought electric bike, cause my little one speed does not do well with these hills and I've almost gotten hit by a car like twice.

Speaker 1:

I know the drivers around here are not. They do not give a shit about anyone riding a bike. They don't. We have no bike lanes. We have no bike friendly situations at all. Columbia do better. I mean, like I want to say people, multiple students get hit by cars on bikes like every year.

Speaker 1:

Jay rode our we share a bike. He rode the bike to work the other day cause he had a conference downtown and so he was like riding it to work and he was like fighting with me like a middle school boy about whether or not he had to wear a helmet. And I was like Jay, I know it is not cool, but if you don't wear a helmet here, it will be a TBI, guaranteed. What's a TBI? Traumatic brain injury? Oh, yeah for sure. Like you have to, yeah, or you are risking your life. Yeah, yeah, so you're wear beyond. It's okay. If you aren't cool for wearing a helmet, yeah, you know like it is cool to wear a helmet now. Yeah, it is Like which? You know what I, to this day, do not? This is a whole thing. It's not a whole thing, it just is whatever.

Speaker 1:

I to this day do not understand why it's illegal to not wear a seatbelt but you don't. It is not the law to wear a helmet on a motorcycle. Yeah, that is Shocking. Crazy to me, that is. It's like wait. So I mean we should all be wearing seatbelts? Yes, obviously, and that was like a big thing, I guess in the 70s, when they made that a law, everyone was like you're taking away my rights. But like, man, progression is not so bad, folks, it's not so bad. But like, and I don't, I just don't understand what the logic is behind. So you have to wear your seatbelt, but if you're on a motorcycle it's not a car, which is way more dangerous, way more dangerous. You don't have to wear a helmet On the interstate. I know Like your head is gonna pop off your body. I mean, a helmet wouldn't help with that, but you would. But it would help impact, it would help a million other things. Yeah, anyway, yep, I don't get it. But I don't get it either. Motorcycles kind of scare me. I'm like do you Once again, no judgment. Do you? Have you ever been on one? Yeah, mom and dad, let me ride on the back of a neighbor's motorcycle whenever I was in middle school, but it was like a mile down the road and I wore a helmet. I don't know if I've ever been on one.

Speaker 1:

There was a girl in my poetry class, the same one where I met the guy that liked in Sink and wanted to do a split yeah, he. There was a girl that would come in every day and I couldn't decide. She was like laying it on thick motorcycle girlie, like, come in with like the leather jacket, okay, okay. She'd have her helmet like over her shoulder. She had like the long brown hair. She was very hot. Who paid for all of this? I'm assuming parents. Okay, like it was like a lower level class. We were not. There were no grad students in that class, maybe not, but I was just like, wow, this is like art, like you're really cool, but are you Like I? It was very honestly, end of the day, very mysterious. Yeah, I mean, I think that was probably the goal. I think it was too. Man Well, shall we get back to spooky season?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, spooky season. Okay, we have a family ghost story. Yeah, kicking off spooky season. How many times can we say spooky season in one episode More, kicking it off with a ghost story of a gal named Becky Baker. How did Becky Baker come about? Becky Baker was first seen by our aunt, so maybe do you want to go into that first, yeah, so yeah, we'll go in order, because these stories All happened like independently of one another until one day they were all, they were all shared, shared. So the first time Becky Baker was seen she was nameless.

Speaker 1:

So my, we grew up on a small island and my grandpa, our grandpa, owns a dock and he ran nature tours, like pontoon nature tours, a space and tours from the dock, and we all and all of us in the family pretty much were like his first mate, often like at some point At some point. So my aunt was his first mate for this specific tour and Part of your duties is to like after everyone's off the dock, you're like tidying up, you're making sure the boats cleaned up, you're like getting the money bag, so you're the last one on the dock. So my aunt one day has cleaned up the dock and she is walking, or she like it's like a Quick moment where she looked and thought she saw a little girl on the at the end of the dock. Little girl. Long brown hair, brown hair, white dress, no brown, I thought she said. They said she looked like our cousin who has brown hair. Okay, so, long brown hair, white dress, classic ghost. But we, she didn't think anything of it because she looked back, nothing was there. She thought it was just like one of those moments where you're like, oh, I thought I saw something, but I didn't. So she like never really thought about, put any thought to it, and then I guess, like weeks months later, yeah, our grandma had seen so same prop, like same plot of land.

Speaker 1:

The house that my grandma lives in is like very near to the dock. Well, so, okay, did you? I like she, she sees the little girl. Sorry, our aunt sees a little girl down at the end of the dock. She goes to the end of the dock, oh, she gets all the way down there and no one's down. I thought it was like from a distance. I thought she saw some. No, I'm pretty sure she was like, wait, I don't think there was a little girl on the tour, like walk down there. It was like, oh, there's no one down here, whatever. Anyways, moving on, mm-hmm. So then, independently, our grandma had seen she had these like sliding glass doors that led to her porch and she had seen a little girl come up to the porch sliding glass doors and was like waiting for our cousin I forgot about about hair and was like similar size to come in. And she was like come on in and like no one came in and she was like oh, that's weird. And I think that that had happened like one or two times.

Speaker 1:

And At some point my grandma and grandpa were in the kitchen cooking breakfast. Someone tapped on the window and they saw they're like cousin that they hadn't seen in years. This is like, I guess, a common thing that people just like drop by. Yeah, well, it's like distance, this is distant cousins, I hadn't seen him in years. Yeah, like driving through. Yes, he like tapped on the window, was like hey, like come in long time to see. So we like popped in.

Speaker 1:

They were all eating breakfast around the table and the cousin asked like hey, do you guys have grandkids staying with you? And they were like no, it's just us. And and the cousin was like, oh, when I tapped on your window, there's a little girl in the kitchen with you. Like who was that? And they were like we like didn't have anyone staying with us. What did she look like? And he like described the same girl that my grandma had seen come to the door and so, like at that point my grandma hadn't told anyone. And so then she's telling my mom and my aunt that story of like you won't believe, our cousin likes all this little girl and I swear I'd been seeing her. And that is when our aunt was like, oh my gosh, I saw her too at the end of the dock.

Speaker 1:

Yes, so shortly after that happened, my mom, or a mom, had a dream that there was this person like Down on the bluff, like near the creek behind our house, like Frantically searching for someone and just like yelling out like Becky, becky Baker. Like couldn't find Becky Baker. So she like wakes up and she's like, oh my gosh, the ghost name, the ghost is back, you Baker. So that's where we came up with the name. Yeah, and they started highly unlikely, because the island that we grew up on is, like native. It's a native island, it's called, it's called Cusaw, which is named after a native group, mm-hmm. And so it's highly unlikely that her name was Becky. What? Yeah, because it wasn't inhabited by people other than native, like native natives until the 70s. Yeah, right, yes, I mean, unless it's like no, before that too. But even then it was like predominantly Like African-American families. I mean, I don't know, we're getting the negrity of it, but basically, basically we looked into records and nothing there. Nothing came up. So, like Becky Baker is totally just a dream that we've like run with, yeah, so don't don't look too deep into that. But the story doesn't end like we kept feeling like, well, okay, so then I don't know that she was seen again.

Speaker 1:

But my mom, we had some funky things happen. Our mom and so also just to set the scene, my, our grandparents, our great grandma when she was living us, and then our aunt and uncle and cousins all lived in a row like one house next to each other. So this is all like in the same vicinity. But my, our parents having spooky things happen, you were still living there when it was happening. So a spooky thing happened to me.

Speaker 1:

I went to go, my parents in my bathroom had a pocket door in the bathroom and the pocket door was locked, which can only be locked from the inside, where the toilet is, and I like couldn't get it open, and so I thought my cousin was in there and I was like knocking on it. No one was in there and so I like went to go. You can like unlock it with like a little. You just like I got a quarter, I think. You like twisted it open and got it open and no one was there. But like I never knew that that's weird and I didn't really think that much of it, cause I was like maybe someone just like slammed it really hard but like me and my cousin were the only ones that were there and like we never shut that door. Like it was very odd that the door was closed in the first place, so we I like brushed that off. I like wouldn't. I didn't think like oh, this is a ghost experience, but I did tell my mom like the door was locked, like the pocket door was locked. That was so weird. So that was like one thing that I experienced.

Speaker 1:

But then our mom kept experiencing like random things, like picture being looked over and stuff. Right yeah, she kept finding like a picture of our dog right, like face down. Oh, I thought it was a family picture, maybe it was. I just thought it was like she was saying like it didn't seem like the cat did it, because if the cat had done it, all the pictures would be knocked down, everything would have been other things would have been knocked over, and it happened multiple times. Or, like this one photo would be flipped over, yeah, and it was just like face down. So then, is it so scary? That's really? That's like really it leading up to the final story yeah, right, yes, like I don't really think that they had any other experiences until my cousin and my friend were living with my mom.

Speaker 1:

At the time, I think I was out of the house, I was like married and my parents my mom always every year buys like brand new advent candles for Christmas and none of the candles had been lit yet. And she woke up one morning and she'd like set them in the candle labra, blah, blah, blah to like decorate for Christmas. And she woke up one morning and the Christ candle, which is like the one you light last, was burned halfway down. And she like accused my cousin and my friend like who lit the Christ candle? Like why would you do that? But blah, blah, blah. Like kept like being like who lit my Christ candle? Who did it? But blah, blah, blah, and both of them were like why, like what? Why would we do that? What is the reasoning that we would like pick this one candle to light and then to burn for hours Halfway down? That's an entire like evening.

Speaker 1:

And like someone would have seen that burning, like it was definitely in the middle of the night, you know what I mean. Or like, while no one was, I have like I know it's so scary, and no one else was around no one, yeah. And like they, my dad wouldn't have lit it. He doesn't light any candles. Do you think he was messing with her? It's possible. He definitely likes to mess with people, but also, he can't keep a secret. He would have 100% taught us at this point. That's true. So, yeah, that's the last thing that happened. And then mom and dad had a priest from their church come and bless the house. Remember that. Yes, it wasn't like an exorcism, but it was like that. No, they just like came and prayed over the house and they had nothing else happened after that. Yeah, like, all spooky things quieted, like all stopped. It's so weird, it is so odd, but that's it.

Speaker 1:

Becky Baker, man, becky Baker. So now we like all joke, we refer to her. Yeah, she's like a family member, it was a tradition for a while where, like anytime we'd have guests come, we'd like tell them the story of Becky Baker. And twice the guests like have not been able to sleep all night. One of them left early so we had to stop telling guests about Becky Baker. But like I don't think anyone ever felt like nobody ever felt scared of Becky Baker, no, mom would always like be like she's a nice ghost. It never felt like spooky, no, it always felt spooky, but it never felt dangerous. No, no, no, no, ugh.

Speaker 1:

But then, like I haven't thought about it in detail in a while, I know Freaks me out Next door at my great grandma's house, which this might be Grammy, who knows the ghost at her house, because the TV would turn on a middle Turn on white noise, like randomly in the middle of the night. It would just be like white noise which, if you've ever seen the ring, look out, cause a little girl might be growing on the TV. Do you think that was this ghost? And when Grammy passed she was like she was like this is boring, I'm gonna mess with some other people, cause it was around that time, wasn't it? I don't know, I don't know, who knows. I love a ghost story, though. I know it was the funniest video on Instagram the other day.

Speaker 1:

It was like if I was a ghost, I'd be a petty ghost. And it was like she just like went around and like pulled one corner of the fitted sheet off oh my gosh and like I don't know, like moved your like phone charger. What would you do if you were a petty ghost? I don't know. I'm trying to think of something that really bothers me. I think that I would put which I do this to Jay all the time.

Speaker 1:

So if I was a petty ghost and I was trying to bother Jay, I would stick the curig, not curig, what do you call it? The water pitcher what do you call those? The hot water pitcher? The Britta oh, the Britta. I would stick the Britta in the fridge with like no water in it. The centimeter of water in it, like every morning. I think I'd move the espresso tamper.

Speaker 1:

So, like every morning, they can't find She'd be a bougie naughty ghost? Yeah, I would. I'm like I don't even have one of those, so good luck finding one in my house. Yeah, oh man. Yeah, I'd go after the spoiled people. Keep the like. Leave a cabinet door open. Oh, leave a tiny bit of toilet paper on the roll. Mm-hmm man, be fun.

Speaker 1:

I know, should we become back as ghosts? How do you get that roll? I know. What do you have to do to become back as a ghost? Yeah, I don't know Cosmic questions. Yeah, we wanna do. We wanna have one episode before spooky seasons over, when we transition to cozy season, thankful season yeah, thank goodness, because I'm not transitioning to Christmas. No, it'll be thankful time, but we wanna do one episode and share ghost stories. So, if you have a ghost story, you have ghost stories at sistershippodcastgmailcom. Yes, and we will read them. We already have we've read that one a couple episodes, but we're good to go about the Catholic ghosts. The Catholic ghosts it wasn't the Catholic ghosts, but it was the Catholic family. Yeah, whatever, yeah, so if you have any ghost stories, send them our way and we'd love to share them at some point this month. Okay, yay, have a spooky week. Ha ha ha. See you next Tuesday.
